The Bronze Review is an introductory review that provides a basic “shelve it” or “pursue it” approach to the review of the first 10,000 words of a manuscript. The Bronze review is not a commentary on the subject matter or possible marketability of the text, but rather a determination of whether the text and the writing is sufficiently compelling to be worth pursuing further or if the manuscript should be “shelved” until further work is completed.
A “Pursue it” designation implies that the manuscript meets certain criteria of originality, intelligibility, and is worth pursuing through further editing or levels of review (such as our Silver and Gold Reviews) before submitting for consideration. For self-published authors, this service can be helpful in gauging initial interest by consumers who may receive the first chapters as preview of the text before buying. A new and fresh story idea may receive a “pursue it” designation even if the writing is sub-par, as technique can be improved with revisions and a good editor.
A “Shelve it” designation implies that the manuscript falls below acceptable levels of readability, originality, or other editorial considerations. When an author shelves a book it does not mean it will never again see the light of day, but will remain on the shelf until a some fresh idea comes along to revitalize the story, giving it new life. It is neither a commentary on the subject matter nor on the possible marketability of the text.
